Schools get funding boost for minor works

Almost 300 schools in the north west are to receive funding as part of the government’s minor works grant scheme.

177 primary schools in Donegal, 68 in county Sligo and 37 in Leitrim are to receive the grants for the 2016/2017 school year.

It’s €5,500 per school as well as an additional €18.50 per pupil. Schools will also receive an extra €74 per special needs pupil.

Works that can be undertaken include improvements to school buildings and grounds, purchase of standard furniture and physical education equipment and the purchase of IT related equipment.

Minister for Education Richard Bruton announced the grant would be worth €28.5 million and will see every primary school in the country receive investment.

Donegal Fianna Fail TD Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher told Ocean FM it is great news but wonders why it cannot be included in the budget every year.
