Former Sligo mayor wants progress on new regional Garda HQ

A former mayor of Sligo has called on the Fine Gael Oireachtas members to push the case for a new garda regional headquarters building in Sligo.

However, it’s understood a site has not even been chosen for the proposed building.

Before the election, it was announced that a new regional headquarters in Sligo was part of a national €60 million garda building and refurbishment programme to build new stations, and improve and refurbish existing stations.

The garda region includes Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan, Louth and Donegal.

However, the current station in Sligo has become unsuitable, both in terms of location and because of a lack of parking and other facilities.

Now, Fianna Fail councillor and former mayor Tom MacSharry says it’s time progress was made on this much-needed regional HQ.

He is to raise the issue at this Monday’s meeting of Sligo County Council.
