A local farming official has claimed that ‘middle ground’ has been reached between Aurivo, the company that run the livestock mart in Ballymote and a committee of farmers and cattle buyers that was established in relation to concerns over it’s long term future.
Concern arose within local agricultural circles after the current mart manager indicated that he was leaving the role to take up a new position with a different company.
A second public meeting on the issues was staged in Ballymote last night and was attended by of crowd estimated to be between 350 and 400 people.
A meeting between the recently formed committee and Aurivo is now expected to take place next week.
Sligo farmer Gerard Pilkington is the president of the Irish Beef and lamb Association. He attended last night’s meeting and earlier spoke to Ocean FM.
In a statement Aurivo Co-op reaffirmed its position that it is fully committed to its Mart business and to supporting the trading of livestock in the area.
They says that Ballymote Mart is a successful operation and has had continued success despite the challenges of the pandemic in recent years.
In the statement Aurivo wised David Faughnan, the outgoing Ballymote Mart Manager, the very best in his new position.
The statement confirms that Aurivo are actively seeking to appoint a successor to replace Mr Faughnan and trusts that customers of Ballymote Mart will be supportive of this endeavour to ensure the Mart’s continued success into the future.
