Project for digital placenames map in Donegal could provide template for country



An ambitious community effort is underway in an area of south west Donegal to record field names and local placenames.

It’s hoped the project taking place in the parish of Gleann Cholm Cille will eventually result in the creation of an interactive digital map showcasing the rich heritage of local placenames in the area and what they tell us.

Project Manager Dermot Diamond says they are bringing technology and heritage together.

He also says their ultimate goal is to produce a template that could be used by others throughout the country to capture what is a rich heritage unique to Ireland.
