Tanasite and Donegal TD clash in Dail over accommodation

A row has erupted in the Dáil after Sinn Féin said the Government should be ashamed of its record when it comes to housing.

It comes amid a severe shortage of student accommodation.

ITSligo Students Union President, Daire Martin recently said some students are being forced to look at hotel rooms.

In the Dáil Tánaiste Leo Varadkar and Sinn Féin’s Pearse Doherty clashed over whether the Government is doing enough.

The Tanaiste said the government is very aware of the problems facing students and suggested the lack of shared accommodation being offered this year due to Covid-19 as having a significant impact.

Deputy Doherty however said the issue around student accommodation has been a problem before Covid-19.

He said there is a housing crisis right across society.

Continued disagreement led to this exchange.
