The Cathoirleach of Sligo County Council is calling on Bank of Ireland to hand back the buildings where their branches were situated in Ballymote and Tubbercurry to the control of the local authority in Sligo or to local communities.
Cllr Dara Mulvey has also called on Bank of Ireland to ensure that the town of Ballymore retains it ATM machine.
The South Sligo Councillor is demanding that Bank of Ireland put in place the mechanism to ensure its ATM machine will stay operational on the main street in Ballymote.
The Cathoirleach of Sligo Council, has placed a notice of motion on the agenda for the upcoming meeting of the local authority calling on the Council to write to Bank of Ireland CEO Francesca McDonagh to voice its anger and disappointment at the announcements of it plans to close branches at Ballymote and Tubbercurry.
Cllr Mulvey says the bank buildings could be utilized as community facilities such as museums to display the wealth of artefacts from south Sligo that are in storage facilities in Dublin
Bank of Ireland will today deny its using reduced footfall during the pandemic as an excuse to close branches.
Representatives of Bank of Ireland will appear before the Oireachtas finance committee to explain why it’s shutting 103 branches across the island in September.
The bank will say footfall at these outlets has dropped by 60 per cent since 2017.
