Move to curb use of antibiotics in farm animals

MEPs last week backed new proposals to limit the use of antibiotics on farms.

The aim would be to to keep food free from resistant bacteria.

If it is adopted, it will mean giving drugs to animals will only be allowed when a vet has given the go ahead if there is a high risk of infection.

It’s hoped the laws will also limit people giving drugs to a group of animals even if only one shows signs of infection.

Sinn Fein MEP for the North West and Midlands, Matt Carthy says the reason it’s so important is because anti biotic resistance is increasing.
