Contests expected for a number of positions on Sligo GAA executive

This year’s Sligo County Convention on Thursday, December 14, is likely to feature contests for a number of positions on the executive.

Secretary Gerry O’Connor, development officer John McPartland, coaching officer Padraig Clancy and Connacht Council representative Richard Brennan will all be stepping down from their current roles because of the five-year rule, and a number of nominations have been put forward to convention.

Bill O’Kelly-Lynch and Bernadine McGauran have been nominated for the secretary role, with Donal Kirby and Cathal Mullaney nominated for the assistant secretary post.

John McPartland and Cathal Martyn are both nominated to takeover as coaching officer, while Richard Brennan and Padraig Clancy are nominated for the development officer position.

Gerry O’Connor, John Watters, Gavin Cawley and the outgoing John Niland are all nominated for the two Connacht Council seats.

Outgoing vice-chairperson John Watters is nominated again for the role but faces a contest from Tourlestrane’s Brendan Leonard.

Chairman Joe Taaffe, treasurer Peter Greene, assistant treasurer Francie Gallagher, PRO Gavin Cawley and Irish & Cultural Officer Keith Henry are all set to be re-elected unopposed.

And two former chairmen, John Murphy and Joe Queenan, have been nominated for the Sligo seat on the Central Council.
