Scanlon: Snails should not take preference over public health



A Sligo Leitrim TD says it’s time to put people before protected snails.

It’s understood the presence of such a special snail was one of the reasons why the initial plans for an interim water treatment at Lough Talt in county Sligo were turned down by An Bord Pleanala.

Lough Talt is in a special area of conservation, however, the water treatment plant is in urgent need of upgrading.

It serves 13,000 people living in the Tubbercurry, Ballymote, Coolaney, Curry and Charlestown area.

Serious concerns have been expressed by the Environmental Protection Agency that the current level of treatment is not enough especially to protect against the presence of cryptosporidium.
