A Sligo/Leitrim TD says the situation surrounding the CF drug Orkambi has highlighted the need to speed up the process of making new drugs available once they have been approved.
Fianna Fail Deputy Marc MacSharry says that while he welcomes the agreement now made with manufacturter Vertex for the drugs Orkambi, Kalidyco and others, the fact that it took so long to get to this point is ‘reprehensible.’
He says the system of getting new drugs onto the Drugs Reimbursement Scheme is inadequate and obscure.
He adds that the availability of 31 drugs is now held up by the process.
