Over 1400 people awaited admission in Sligo & Letterkenny hospitals in January

Both Sligo and Letterkenny University Hospitals were among the most overcrowded in January.

Figures released today by the INMO show there were only three instances this month nationally where less than 500 people were waiting on trolleys, chairs or other inappropriate bed spaces.

Collectively, over 1400 people awaited admission to the two North West hospitals this month.

701 people waited at Sligo while 709 people waiting at Letterkenny.

Letterkenny has been ranked fourth most overcrowded for January while Sligo comes fifth.

Both hospitals saw an increase compared to trolley numbers for the same period for 2023.

In a statement today, the INMO say that some of the care environments are totally inappropriate, in some instances the care is provided on chairs and that it’s clear that capacity in the health system isn’t sufficient

They are calling on the HSE to agree to a realistic workforce plan which provides for sufficient nurses and midwives to be employed to provide safe care and plan for more beds to open
