North West groups clean up at Ocean Hero Awards



North West groups and campaigners were rewarded for their efforts at the Clean Coasts Ocean Hero Awards yesterday.

The ceremony was hosted at the Raddison Blu Royal Hotel in Dublin last night.

In total, two groups from the North West took home awards, while others made the final shortlist across various categories.

The North West Home Education Group won the Youth of the Year award. This group consists of children and young adults who are home educating and have been carrying out beach and river cleans in Inishowen.

There was also success for the region in the Campaigner of the Year award, with Friends of Rossnowlagh taking the top prize for their efforts in designing a new campaign to help tackle dog waste on the beach called “Lift It, Bin It”.

Martina Healy, also known as Leitrim’s Litter Picker, and “Our Crossings”, who are two bloggers, were shortlisted for promoting the #2MinuteBeachClean campaign across various platforms in the same category.

Honourary prizes were awarded in the Tourism Special Recognition Category, with the Falcarragh Clean Coasts group and Streedagh Clean Coasts group receiving the special prizes.
