Coolera/Strandhill celebrate Sligo senior football title

Coolera/Strandhill are champions of Sligo in senior men’s gaelic football for just the third time in the club’s history.

They came from behind to beat newcomers St Molaise Gaels in Sunday’s Homeland SFC final at Markievicz Park on a final scoreline of 0-11 to 0-8.

Listen back to the commentary highlights here:

Their county under-20 stars Ross Doherty and Mark McDaniel played key roles in the win with McDaniel collecting the Player of the Match award.

It was also a special afternooon for Sligo county captain Niall Murphy – who chipped in some some exquisite scores at key moments to win his first senior club title.

Coolera trailed St Molaise by 0-5 to 0-1 in the opening quarter of the game – but refused to panic – and they outscored their opponents by 0-9 to 0-3 in the second-half to secure the Owen B Hunt Cup – and add to the previous roll of honour of senior titles in 1907 and 2005.

Team captain Peter Laffey and Player of the Match Mark McDaniel spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s Austin O’Callaghan after the win.
