Gardaí confirm that they are investigating criminal damage at Carrowkeel historical site



Gardaí have confirmed that they are investigating an incident of criminal damage that occurred at the historical site in Carrowkeel.

 

The incident is believed to have happened at some stage on Saturday last.

 

A technical examination of the scene has been conducted by the Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit.

 

Gardai say that investigations are ongoing.

 

Sligo County council yesterday expressed there shock that anyone would think it appropriate to damage these sites left by our ancestors over 5000 years ago, warning that the monuments are fragile and need to be protected and treated with respect.

 

The National Monument Service (NMS) and Office of Public Works (OPW)also released a joint statement,

denouncingthe vandalism carried out on the Carrowkeel Passage Tomb Complex.
