Bigger Garda presence needed to enforce new bank holiday legislation

A Sligo councillor says unless sufficient numbers of Gardai are allocated to road policing units proposed changes to laws for bank holidays are a waste of time.

Motorists found guilty of traffic offences at bank holiday weekends will face higher penalty points under proposed legislation aimed at improving road safety.

The proposal for motorists to get higher penalty points at bank holiday weekends for offences, such as speeding, is to be included in the Road Traffic Measures Bill 2023 being developed by Minister of State for Transport Jack Chambers.

The move has been successfully introduced in other jurisdictions like Australia.

Another measure expected to be included in the planned legislation is an increase in the number of penalty points for motorists who are detected committing more than one driving offence while the introduction of mandatory testing for drugs at the scene of road collisions could also be introduced.

Sligo Independent councillor Marie Casserly has worked on road safety forums in the past.

She says the success of the proposed legislation will come down to how well it will be enforced.
