Taoiseach urged to save Leitrim Community Car Scheme



The Taoiseach is being urged to sanction funding in a bid to save the Leitrim Community Car Scheme.

 

Operated by more than 35 volunteer drivers, in the last 14 months the service has carried 533 people to hospital appointments in the region.

 

However it wound down its operations yesterday due to a lack of support from both the Government and the HSE.

 

Sligo-Leitrim TD Marian Harkin it would cost so little to keep what is a vital service on the road:

 

Responding, Minister for Rural and Community Development and Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys said she was open to further discussions on the issue.
