Senator seeks apology regarding traveller education

A Donegal-based Senator seeking an apology from Education Minister Norma Foley after a report into the experience of school going travellers in North Cork found they’re facing barriers to education.

Senator Flynn is the only female Traveller to be elected to the Oireachtas.

Ms Flynn who lived in Donegal since 2018, is calling for an urgent meeting with the Education Minister after the report found some schools are still segregating children into Traveller-only classrooms.

It also uncovered that early school leaving is encouraged, with some teachers actively encouraging children to leave school once they hit the legal age of 16.

Senator Eileen Flynn says traveller children should have equal opportunities.
