Increased penalty points could be introduced in a bid to lower the number of road fatalities



The Justice Minister says an increase in penalty points for speeding could be a way to deal with the rise in the number of road fatalities.

 

The Fine Gael minister has also suggested that more Gardai be allocated to the Roads. Policing Unit

 

Gardai concluded their National Slow Down Day campaign at 7am this morning checking over 142 thousand vehicles for speeding since 7am yesterday morning.

 

At 9 p.m. last night  310 vehicles were detected travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

 

One example locally was a vehicle clocked at 99km/h in a 60km/h Zone on the R267 Magheracar, Bundoran in county Donegal.

 

The Leitrim Roads Policing Units detected a number of drivers in excessive of speed limits.
One driver was detected speeding, 80km in a 50km zone. He was also arrested for drug driving.

 

 

So far this year, there have been 127 deaths on Irish roads, 23 more than the same period in 2022.
