Sligo’s Seamus Somers retains Warriors title

Sligo Athletic Club’s Seamus Somers retained his Warriors Run title at Strandhill on Saturday to the delight of the vocal home support.

This hugely popular event attracted 1219 runners and walkers this year.

The Warriors Run is a 10-miler which takes competitors from the Cannon along the beachfront at Strandhill Village in Sligo to the top of Knocknarea Mountain – and back down again.

Somers, who won his first Warriors 12 months ago and turned 50 this year, led the field as they began the climb up Knocknarea mountain – but by the time he’d reached the summit, the Sligo AC man had dropped to fourth.

Then followed a blistering descent as he negotiated a couple of falls on the way down to retake the lead – and held onto it to the finish to win in 59 mins 18 secs.

Two other local athletes, Barry Minnock and Aidan McMoreland, finished second and third respectively.

Somers ave his reaction afterwards to Ocean FM Sport’s Dónal Ryan.

Aoife McCavana, competing in her first Warriors Run, was the first female finisher on Saturday.

She also spoke to Dónal Ryan.
