Sligo lose championship opener to Down

Sligo women’s gaelic footballers suffered an opening weekend defeat to Down at Markievicz Park in Sunday’s TG4 All-Ireland junior football championship opener, on a final scoreline of 1-13 to 2-5.

The home side managed just a solitary score for the first 45 minutes of this game – but they rallied somewhat in the closing stages, scoring two Leah Duffy goals to put some respectability on the scoreboard.

Down beat Sligo by five points earlier this year in the league – and it was a similar winning margin here.

Sligo duo Katie Walsh and Sinead Regan spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s Austin O’Callaghan after the game.

Sligo are in a four-team Group A in the junior grade this year, which also includes Limerick and London.

The top two counties from Groups A and B will qualify directly for All-Ireland semi-finals.

TG4 All-Ireland JFC – Group A
Sligo 2-5 Down 1-13
Kilkenny 1-5 Limerick 7-21

Group B
Fermanagh 1-13 Carlow 0-9
London 2-12 Derry 1-4.
