North West beaches receive Blue Flag and Green Coast awards

A number of beaches across the North West have picked up Blue Flag and Green Coast Awards.

A Blue Flag has become an internationally recognised symbol, and is awarded to beaches with high standards in water quality, environmental management, environmental education and safety, while the aim of the Green Coast Award is to recognise beaches of high environmental quality.

To achieve the award, beaches must have excellent water quality and have effective and appropriate management to ensure the protection of the natural environment.

Four beaches in South Donegal were awarded a Blue Flag, with Bundoran, Rossnowlagh, Murvagh and Fintra all acknowledged.

Two beaches in Sligo, Streedagh and Dunmoran Strand picked up Green Coast awards.

Rosses Point beach in Sligo was one of just eight beaches around the country to pick up both a Blue Flag and Green Coast award.
