North West vulnerable to economic hit this summer

A Sligo councillor says the high dependency that the north west region has on tourism will leave the local region more vulnerable to the impact of the economy suffering a €1.1bn hit due to the lack of hotel accommodation this summer, with the ongoing challenge of housing refugees.

The Irish Independent are reporting that a secret Government memo was recently circulated to Ministers in relation to such concerns.

Fáilte Ireland, claim that for every €1 spent on accommodation, every tourist visitor to Ireland spends another €2.50 in the local economy.

Sligo Strandhill Councillor Sinead Maguire says it’s vital that tourism businesses that do not provide accommodation receive additional supports.
