Sligo outclassed by Galway in Connacht final

The gulf between Divisions 1 and 4 was cruelly exposed in Sunday’s Connacht senior football final in Castlebar as Galway cruised to a 2-20 to 0-12 victory over a Sligo team who battled hard, but were second best in most sectors.

Despite a bright opening opening which saw Tony McEntee’s side lead by 0-3 to 0-1 in the opening moments, Galway quickly took control and two first-half goals from Man of the Match Matthew Tierney put in a commanding position which they never looked back from.

Tierney finished the day with 2-7.

It completes back-to-back Connacht senior titles for Galway for the first time in 20 years.

For Sligo, attention now turns to the first of their Sam Maguire Cup Group 3 games against Kildare at Markievicz Park on May 20/21st.

Colm McGee spoke to Sligo manager Tony McEntee, team captain Niall Murphy and his Coolera/Strandhill clubmate Keelan Cawley after Sunday’s loss:
