Sligo’s Barry Anderson reaches West of Ireland semi-finals

Co Sligo Golf Club’s Barry Anderson is through to Tuesday morning’s semi-finals of the Connolly’s Audi West of Ireland Championship at Rosses Point following a dramatic one-hole victory over James Hewitt of Tandragee in Monday afternoon’s quarter-final.

Anderson, a winner of the West in 2017, was one down with two holes to play but holed a vital downhill put to bring the match level on the 17th.

On the final green, Hewitt, who earlier had beaten another Co Sligo golfer, Ruairi O’Connor in the last 16, three-putted to give Anderson victory.

The leader after the three rounds of strokeplay, 20-year-old Englishman James Claridge continued his impressive form beating former champion Joe Lyons in the last 16 in the morning – and Patrick Keeling (Roganstown) 5&3 in the afternoon.

Slieve Russell’s Shane McDermott, who needed a play-off to make the matchplay stages on Sunday evening, was an impressive 6&5 winner over Letterkenny’s Cian Harkin.

There was disappointment for Co Sligo’s Ruairi O’Connor in the last 16.

He was three up against James Hewitt at one stage – but eventually lost the match on the 18th.

Tuesday morning’s semi-final pairings:
James Claridge (Eng) v Marc Boucher (Carton House) 8am

Shane McDermott (Slieve Russell) v Barry Anderson (Co Sligo) 8:15am
