Sligo once again features in list of most overcrowded facilities for February

Sligo University Hospital has once again featured in a list of the most overcrowded facilities for the month of February.

The hospital came in fifth place in terms of overcrowding last month.

Over the course of February, a total of 528 people waited for a bed at Sligo University Hospital.

However it’s still a decrease compared to the 618 patients who waited at the facility in February 2022.

In a statement, INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha says that February was an incredibly challenging month for nurses and midwives working in the Irish public health service with over 10,000 people admitted to hospital nationally for care for whom there were no beds.

She says that nurses are working in extremely unsafe conditions and that it’s clear that medium and long-term plans are needed to resolve the overcrowding issues.

The HSE and Minister for Health are also being urged to give an update on whether the measures they introduced in January to relieve pressure on the health system have had a real impact and what they are going to do to prevent further spikes in March and April.
