Leitrim Council reject speculation that Bank of America building will be used to accommodate refugees

A spokesperson for Leitrim County Council has described recent speculation suggesting that refugees will be housed in the former Bank of America building as false.

The building situated in Carrick-on-Shannon was recently purchased by the local Authority after Funding of €7.2 million was allocated for its purchase.

The funding was provided under the Rural, Regeneration and Development Fund.

It’s thought that an additional 600 jobs could be created at the site through the establishment of a number of small to medium sized enterprises.

There was further speculation over the weekend that the site of the former Rockin’ Robins Night Club at Cartown House on the Leitrim road was also going to be used as an emergency accommodation facility for refugees.

A spokesperson for the owner of the facility has today confirmed to Ocean FM news that despite claims to the contrary on social media there are currently no refugees being accommodated on the site and that there are no immediate plans to provide accommodation for refuges at the site of the former Night Club.
