Councillor defends use of term “Soft Independents”



There were tense scenes at the latest meeting of Sligo County Council, after a Sinn Féin Councillor labelled Independent representatives in government as “soft” when bringing motions forward.

Councillor Arthur Gibbons claimed that current Independents align themselves to certain political parties, and that such moves were made to keep Sinn Féin out of power.

The wording of his motions irked his fellow councillors, and speaking to Ocean FM News, Councillor Gibbons defended his use of the term, “Soft Independents”:
