15 passengers safely evacuated prior to Bus catching fire in Letterkenny

An investigation is underway into the cause of a major bus fire in Letterkenny last night.

The Bus Eireann Expressway bus was evacuated before the fire took hold and there are no reports of any injuries.

The vehicle caught fire at the Dry Arch roundabout on the outskirts of the town shortly after 8pm.

The roundabout, which is the main artery into the town was closed for a time as firefighters battled the blaze.

It’s believed that the bus was scheduled to take the passengers to Dublin when the incident occurred.

It’s not yet known what caused the fire.

In a statement, Bus Eireann say that all 15 passengers on board the Expressway coach from Letterkenny to Dublin were safely evacuated after the fire broke out.

Bus Eireann has described the incident as an exceptionally rare occurrence in its fleet and say that the matter will be thoroughly investigated.

The organisation also thanked the emergency services, the driver and passengers for their rapid and effective response.

Passengers were subsequently accommodated to continue their journey to Dublin on another vehicle.
