McKenna Cup holders lose opening game to Down



Dr McKenna Cup holders Monaghan lost their opening Section A match of the 2023 competition to Down on Wednesdaay night, on a final scoreline of 2-10 to 0-12.

The Farney men had earlier in the day confirmed the intercounty retirements of Drew Wylie and Colin Walshe.

Monaghan will travel to Ballybofey next Wednesday (Jan 11th) to play Paddy Carr’s Donegal in their second group game, which will be repeat of last year’ s McKenna Cup final.

Before that, Donegal travel to Newry this Sunday to play Down at 1:30pm. The game will be live in full on oceanfm.ie.

Elsewhere, on Wednesday night, Peter Harte and Cathal McShane scored three-points a-piece as Tyrone ran out 17-points to 1-7 winners over Kieran Donnelly’s Fermanagh in Omagh in Section B.

While in Section C, Armagh were too good for Antrim, cruising to a 2-20 to 2-8 win.
