Sligo IFA chairperson says climate plan is targeting farmers



 

A leading framing official in the north west has accused the Climate Minister of picking on farmers in the updated Climate Action Bill.

 

It’s understood that a cut in the amount of cattle in Ireland of up to 10 per cent is being considered.

 

 

Agriculture is the largest single sector when it comes to gas emissions, accounting for 37.5 per cent last year.

 

Yet it faces the lowest reduction target of any sector, being asked to reduce emissions by 25 per cent by 2030

 

 

Targets also include reducing the number of car journeys by 20 per cent, having one in three cars electric by 2030.

 

The new to increase the amount of forest planted to 8,000 hectares a year by 2023, as well as establishing a new green energy tariff to encourage people to use renewables.
