Donegal’s Niamh McLaughlin named LGFA Player of the Year

Donegal’s senior football team captain Niamh McLaughlin was named the TG4 LGFA senior Player of the Year at Saturday night’s All-Stars banquet in Dublin.

It was a memorable night for the Moville woman as she also collected her first All-Star earlier in the evening – gaining a midfield selection on the All-Star fifteen.

McLaughlin led Donegal to the national football league final this year (which they lost narrowly to Meath) and they also reached the All-Ireland senior football semi-finals.

At 29 years of age, she’s already had three cruciate ligament injuries during her playing career – but is back playing as well as every.

She spoke to Jerome Quinn at Saturday night’s Awards Ceremony:

The other five Donegal nominees on the night were Termon sisters Nicole and Geraldine McLaughlin, Evelyn McGinley, Robert Emmets’ Tanya Kennedy and Moville’s Niamh Hegarty.

Elsewhere on the night, Fermanagh’s Bláithín Bogue was named Junior Player of the Year for 2022 for her performances with the Erne County en route to this year’s All-Ireland junior final, which they lost to Antrim after a replay.
