Donegal’s Amber Barret sends Ireland to Women’s World Cup

A goal from Donegal’s Amber Barrett was the Republic of Ireland’s matchwinner in Tuesday night’s women’s World Cup qualifier as she scored the only goal of the game to send Vera Pauw’s side to next year’ s World Cup finals.

Ireland beat Scotland on a famous night at Hampden Park in Glasgow 1-0.

Barrett, introduced as a second-half substitute for Hannah Payne, struck for the all-important goal in the 72nd minute with an excellent, composed finish.

It was a poignant goal for the Milford native as immediately after scoring, she knelt to the ground and displayed her black armband in memory of the 10 victims of the Creeslough tragedy in her home county.

Speaking after the final whistle, Barrett, whose mother Jacqui hails from Cresslough, told RTÉ Sport:

“This is for all the young kids growing up…they can all dream.

“I know Creeslough like the back of my hand. I knew people who died in the tragedy.

“This game, that goal – I’m dedicating it to those 10 beautiful souls”.

The result sends Ireland to the Women’s World Cup finals for the first time in the country’s history.

Australia and New Zealand will host the women’s World Cup in 2023 (July 20th to Aug 20th).
