Leitrim Gaels & Fenagh reach championship knockout stages

The two remaining unbeaten teams in this year’s Leitrim Connacht Gold senior football championships, Fenagh/St Caillin’s and Leitrim Gaels, have assured themselves of places in the knockout stages following their weekend victories over Dromahair and Gortletteragh.

Fenagh overpowered Dromahair in Glencar on Friday night by 5-27 to 2-8 while Leitrim Gaels made it three wins out of three in the group stage on Saturday evening with a comprehensive 2-17 to 0-10 success at home to Gortletteragh.

Both teams are assured of quarter-final places and could yet qualify directly for the semi-finals if they finish first and second in the standings following next weekend’s fourth and final round of round-robin games.

The senior championship format in Leitrim this year sees the 10 clubs play four group games each. The top two teams qualify directly for the semi-finals – with the next four teams contesting two quarter-finals.

As things stand, Eamonn O’Hara’s Mohill and Martin Greene’s Glencar/Manorhamilton look like battling it out for the sixth and final place in the knockout stages.
