Warriors Run 2022 this Saturday

One of Sligo’s signature sports events, the Warriors Run, returns to Strandhill this Saturday afternoon.

1200 competitors are registered to line up in front of the cannon at the Strandhill seafront for the 10-mile run up to the top of Knocknarea mountain and back.

The event first began in 1985 as part of the Sligo Summer Festival and has blossomed into one of the most popular running events in the region in the intervening 36 years.

The race makes a welcome ‘in-person’ return for the first time post-pandemic – and has been a sell-out since registration opened last April, as Warriors Run PRO Micki Murray explained to Ocean FM Sport.

Belgium’s Max Drion was the most recent winner of the run when it was last held in 2019.

Ocean FM Sport will bring you live online coverage here on oceanfm.ie of this Saturday’s Warriors Run from 3.15pm from the start/finish area, as we capture a flavour of the atmosphere.

A series of road closures will be in operation in the Strandhill area on Saturday.

They are as follows:

With traffic congestion around Strandhill also expected, a special Bus Éireann timetable between Sligo town and the seaside village will also be in operation for both competitors and spectators.

There are other events on Saturday too with the Young Warriors Run again taking place directly after the start of the main race.

This will be followed by the Warriors Walk along a 10-kilometre route which follows the road section of the Warriors Run.
