Donegal’s Geraldine Stewart gets senior Athletics Ireland role



Donegal Town’s Geraldine Stewart has been appointed as the new Director of Competition with Athletics Ireland.

The Tir Chonaill Athletic Club athlete will have  will have overall responsibility for the competition management of the sport’s governing body across its track & field, cross country, road racing and race walking programmes.

She’s been given the full-time role on a two-year contract.

 

Stewart has worked professionally for the past 20 years in sports management, adult education and coaching.

Athletically, the Donegal native progressed through the juvenile and Senior ranks at Tir Chonaill AC, winning numerous Irish senior titles.

She competed internationally and captained three club teams. during the 2000s to Irish Premier League victories and Irish representation at European clubs in Belguim,Switzerland and Slovakia.

Currently she continues to compete at Masters level, recently breaking Irish age group records and assisting Tir Chonaill at National League finals.

Speaking to Athletics Ireland on Wednesday, Stewart said: “I am delighted to be taking on the role of Director of Competition with Athletics Ireland and I look forward to working with everyone involved in ensuring our National Competitions are delivered to the highest standard.

“Our recent success in international competition shows the importance of building a strong competitive environment from Juvenile to Senior level.”

She will begin her new role with Athletics Ireland on September 1st.
