Sligo Leitrim TD calls for ban on evictions

A Sligo Leitrim TD is calling for a further ban on evictions, like that enacted during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Deputy Martin Kenny has made the calls in response to the surge in the number of tenants being given notice to vacate their rental properties.

The Residential Tenancies Board is reporting a 58% increase in the number of eviction notices issued in the first 6 months of 2022, compared with the final 6 months of last year.

Almost 3,000 notices to quit were issued between January and the end of June, with the RTB saying the main reason is landlord’s quitting the private rental market so they can sell their properties.

The Sinn Fein TD says there are many examples locally of people being forced to leave properties after the Landlords have to decided to sell.

Deputy Kenny says tenants must be allowed to live in the houses after the sales are completed and that  evictions need to be banned
