Local TD frustrated by Direct Provision numbers as local Hospitality sector cries out for workers

A Sligo Leitrim TD says a new approach is needed to dealing with the issue of Direct Provision.

The comments from Deputy Martin Kenny come as a record number of people, almost 11,700 , are living in Direct Provision.

The Sinn Fein TD says it’s frustrating to see so many people waiting to leave Direct Provision Centres at the same time as the Hospitality and Tourism sectors are crying out for workers to help meet the demands that are currently being placed on the sectors as the country returns to a degree of normality following the Covid-19 Pandemic.

According to the Irish Times 6,266 people are in centres, while almost 5,000 are staying in emergency accommodation.

The Sinn Fein Spokesperson on Justice and Equality says that some form of Direct Provision will have to exist in the future but he says the numbers are still a cause of concern.
