Sligo Councillor warns of increasing levels of radon gas

More homes in the north west are at risk from high levels of a cancer-causing radioactive gas than previously thought.

That’s according to a new countrywide survey.

The survey revealed that 170,000 houses throughout the Country are located in high radon zones – 45,000 more than when the data was last gathered in 2002.

It’s emerged that there are areas in Sligo and some in north Leitrim where the carbon concentrations are in excess of the national reference level.

Householders are being urged to check their address or Eircode against an online radon map on the Environmental Protection Agency website to see the risk in their area.

Radon is the main cause of lung cancer in non-smokers in Ireland, with 350 new cases attributed to it every year.

Councillor Paul Taylor is the Cathlaoirleach of Sligo County Council.

He says it’s important that people are aware of the health risks that radon gas possesses
