Sligo MEP calls for outstanding Protocol issues to be resolved

Midlands/North West MEP Chris MacManus says outstanding issues related to the Northern Ireland Protocol must be tackled.

The first meeting of a group set up to manage the EU and UK’s post-Brexit relationship takes this week.

Both parliaments are sending 35 representatives each.

The meetings will be chaired by UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and European Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic.

MEP MacManus says it’s important those impacted in Northern Ireland are listened to.

The British foreign secretary is rejecting proposals from the EU to resolve issues around post-Brexit trading arrangements.

Liz Truss says their plans would lead to more checks, paperwork and disruption for goods crossing the Irish Sea.

She says the UK won’t “shy away” from taking action over the Northern Ireland Protocol, which is causing a stalemate over a new power-sharing agreement at Stormont.
