North West farming official says silage grant is not enough

A leading north west based farming official is warning that there will be fodder shortage in the winter of 2022

The warning has been issued despite farmers being in line to receive a bonus payment of up to 1,000 euro for growing silage.

The Agriculture Minister will ask cabinet to approve the scheme today.

It would see farmers eligible for a payment of 100 euro per hectare for all silage cut up to 10 hectares.

Kevin Comiskey is  The IFA National Sheep Chairman. He says the cost of fertiliser has risen sharply in recent times and as result there will be a negative impact on the amount of hay and silage available later this year.

The Leitrim farming official says today’s announcement is to be welcomed but’s it’s simply not enough address the costs associated with fertiliser at present.
