Sligo Councillor concerned over lack of social services in Cliffoney and Carrigans

A Sligo councillor has been told a date cannot be given at present for the reopening of social service centres for older people in the Cliffoney and Carrigans areas of north Sligo.

Services in the centres ceased because of Covid.

At this month’s meeting of the Regional Health Forum West, Dermot Monaghan, acting chief officer of the Community Health Organisation One area, told Cllr Donal Gilroy that HSE senior management is reviewing structural reports on both the Cliffoney and Carrigans centres.

Alternative suitable premises capable of providing social day care services are also being considered.

Meanwhile, the HSE says day care continues to be provided at home, as well as increased home respite and Meals on Wheels to support older people and their families.

However, Cllr Gilroy says older people need social contact, adding that he raised the issue with Mr Monaghan and HSE Chief Executive Paul Reid.

Cllr Gilroy says it’s an urgent issue for people in the Cliffoney, Carrigans and Maugherow areas.
