Donegal cycling club wants hard shoulder on McGrory’s Brae

A Donegal cycling club has launched a campaign to have a hard shoulder provided on a section of the Donegal Town to Ballybofey road.

The campaign follows a near fatal collision along the route last October when a club member was hit from behind, resulting in serious injuries and the destruction of his bike.

Finn Wheelers Cycling Club is calling for the hard shoulder on the 750-metre stretch, known as McGrory’s Brae.

The route is popular with cyclists, with local clubs of more than 500 members using it regularly.

It is also used for events such as the Donegal Ultra 555, the Ras Tailteann international race, Cycle Against Suicide and Mizen to Malin challenges.

The Finn Wheelers Cycling Club says that in recent months, €8m has been allocated to Donegal County Council for walking and cycling routes

Assistant PRO of the club, Brian McElhinney, is asking that some of this money go toward a hard shoulder on McGrory’s Brae.

Meanwhile, the Finn Wheelers Cycling Club want to hear back from local politicians within the next month about what is going to happen to their demand for the hard shoulder on McGrory’s Brae.
