Mixed fortunes for local sides in Connacht Cup



There was mixed fortunes for local sides in the last 16 of the Connacht Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Strand Celtic continued their fine form as they defeated Mervue United ‘B’ in Renmore five-two. Goals from Dylan Martin, Aaron O’Boyle (two), Conor McKeown and Lee Wilson propelled their side to victory at the Galway city venue.

Fellow Sligo Southern Hotel Super League side Ballisodare United faced Mervue United ‘A’ in Ballisodare. Unfortunately from Noel Meenaghan’s charges point of view, their opponents were too strong and came away with a three-nil victory.

Elsewhere, in Lecarrow Boyle Celtic suffered a two-one defeat to Athenry FC. Shane Battles gave Boyle Celtic the lead after 18 minutes. However, a goal in either half and a plethora of missed chances from Boyle Celtic gave the five-time Connacht Cup champions the victory.

Locally, champions Carbury kept the pressure on leaders Cartron FC with a four-one victory over Arrow Harps on Saturday evening. Mark McGoldrick (2), Jason Lyons and Gareth Kelly all on target for the winners.

Cartron responded to that victory with a win and four goals of their own at Aughanagh Celtic on Sunday morning. An own goal and a hat-trick from league top scorer Malachy Spratt guaranteed the victory.

In the key top of the table clash at Mac Sharry Park in the Sligo Pallets Premier League, St. John’s and Coolaney United shared the spoils in a two-all draw. Darragh McGoldrick and Donal Fidgeon scored for St. John’s, while league top scorer Cathal Davey and Ciaran McMurray were on target for Ryan Mattthews’ side.

The draw allowed Calry Bohs jump to second in the table after they defeated Valley Rovers by eight goals to one at Hazlewood with Aaron Flynn claiming the matchball.
