Sligo & Donegal athletes among the medals at Irish Indoor Championships



Sligo Athletic Club’s Ruth Monaghan and Lauren Cadden were among the medals on the opening day of the Irish Life Health Senior Indoor Athletics Championship, held at the National Indoor Arena in Dublin on Saturday.

Ruth Monaghan of Sligo AC. produced an impressive display in the women’s 3k walk final to win the silver medal.

Waterford’s Kate Veale was the clear winner of the race  with Monaghan finishing second in a time of 15mins 51.98secs.

Sprinter Lauren Cadden took bronze in the women’s 200 metres final on Saturday – and Dromore West’s Keelan Kilrehill also won bronze in a high quality men’s 3000 final, finishing behind Darragh McElhinney and rising Tyrone star Nick Griggs.

In the field events, the Finn Valley AC duo of James Kelly and Gavin McLaughlin won silver and bronze respectively in the senior men’s shot putt.

In the men’s 800 metres, Mark English qualified comfortably for Sunday’s final after winning his semi-final heat in 1min 52.90secs.
