Student accommodation crisis only getting worse say MEP

A Midlands/North West MEP says the student accommodation issues are only getting worse at the likes of ITSligo and LYIT.

Chris MacManus says the cost of renting has led many students to commuting long distances on a daily basis and the situation is an extension of the national housing crisis.

He says he has spoken to the Student Union Presidents in Both Sligo and Letterkenny where they say most students in Sligo are paying between €100 and €180 a week.

Students in Letterkenny are paying €90 to €100 with purpose built student accommodation being the most expensive in both areas.

Speaking to OceanFM News, he says the situation is putting demand on the private rental sector which means students are suffering.
