Leitrim’s Áine Tighe makes AFL debut this weekend

After two knee ligament injuries in successive seasons, Leitrim’s Áine Tighe will finally make her women’s AFL debut in Australia this weekend when she lines out for the Freemantle Dockers in a derby game against West Coast Eagles.

The Kiltubrid woman joined Freemantle a couple of years ago but, on the eve of the past two seasons, has suffered serious knee injuries.

She damaged her medial ligament at the start of last season – and in January 2020, ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament on the same knee in Fremantle’s final pre-season fixture.

But she’s fighting fit again and has been selected by Freemantle to play in this weekend’s season-opening fixture.

Prior to her move to Australia, Tighe enjoyed a distinguished gaelic football career with Leitrim, captaining her club Kiltubrid to two county championships, as well as winning two Connacht intermediate championships and a Division 4 NFL title with Leitrim.
