The cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council says people living in local authority-owned houses and who are on pensions will soon be able to apply to buy out their house under the Tenant Purchase Scheme.
To date, people on pensions were unable to buy out their houses, even if they had lived in them for years, because pensions were not regarded as adequate sources of income.
But Leitrim Fianna Councillor Paddy O’Rourke says that will change from 1st February next.
