Sligo turkey producer says there’s uncertainty in the market this year

The Covid 19 pandemic, and the onset of the Omicron variant in particular, is creating uncertainty in the Christmas turkey market as many families are unsure how many visitors they will have for the festive season.

While some families may have ordered large birds in past years, this is not the norm this year.

Indeed, some people who have already ordered big birds say they are now having second thoughts because of the new restrictions imposed because of the highly-transmissible Omicron variant.

Ann O Donovan, of Ballisodare Free Range Turkeys in County Sligo, did not rear any turkeys last year but decided to get back into the market this year, producing 100 birds.

She has been telling Ocean FM News of her experience in what has been an uncertain year for turkey producers.
