Housing Minister should be held accountable for the current accommodation crisis



On the day that a homeless and accommodation protest is taking place in Sligo, calls are being made on the local authority to hold Minister for Housing to account.

 

Sligo Traveller Support Group staged a protest at the offices of Sligo County Council earlier this morning.

 

Meanwhile the Local Labour party representative in Sligo/Leitrim, Nessa Cosgrove says Local Authority and Housing Association properties available to let in Sligo Town remain as rare as Hen’s Teeth, while rents have soared in the private sector.

 

The former General Election candidate claims that in November 2020 there were 45 adults and 5 children in homeless accommodation in Sligo.

 

She says the Simon Community recently reported that 86 people (including 12 children) were accessing emergency accommodation across the North West.
