Sligo Rovers Niall Morahan signs for two more years

Sligo Rovers talented midfielder Niall Morahan has signed a new two-year contract extension with Sligo Rovers FC.

The deal will keep the 21-year-old Leitrim native at the Showgrounds for the 2022 and 2023 season.

Voted the club’s Player of the Season in 2020, Morahan has been a key first-team squad member for the past three seasons since graduating from the club’s Academy.

He joined Rovers as a teenager from his home club Carrick Town FC.

He was the first recipient of the club’s revamped scholarship scheme set up in partnership with IT Sligo.

The arrival of Greg Bolger and Adam McDonnell in 2021 made competition for midfield places in the Rovers starting 11 particularly ‘hot’ this season.

However, Morahan still managed to make the highest number of midfield appearances for Rovers during the 2021 Premier Division campaign.

Speaking to sligorovers.com on Monday, Morahan said: “I’ve been here for a good few years and my aim recently has been step up and become of one of the experienced players and someone for the next crop of players coming through to look up to.

“Most importantly, it’ll be to be in the team and keep improving. We all feel we can build on this position and get to the next level so it’s just about working hard to get there.”

A total of 16 players have now signed for the Bit O’ Red for next season.

Nine of those are from the club’s academy.
